Unconventional holiday in Croatia

Island Sestrica Vela

Croatia, Northern Dalmatia

Island Sestrica Vela falls under the Kornati archipelago and is located north of the National Park Kornati near the cliff Grpascak. The island is uninhabited and there are no other buildings accept the lighthouse Tajer, which was built in 1876. The Tajer lighthouse is known to all visitors to the Kornati National Park, thanks to a significant 28 m high octagonal tower. The surface of the island of Vela Sestrica is 0.098 km ² and the length of its coast is 1.38 km. Next to the island of Vela Sestrica is the smaller island Mala Sestrica.
To the island of Setrica Vela you can arrive after about 15 nautical miles sail from Zadar through the labyrinth of islands, islets and rocks. The last barrier is the narrow maritime passage Mala Proversa, north of Sestrica Vela. There is also a small meteorological station on Sestrica Vela, whose information is regularly read by the lighthouse keepers and reported to the State Meteorological Institute by radio station. The dense pine forest that covers most of the island of Sestrica Vela is also an ornithological reserve. Migratory birds are staying there for several months before flying to the southern regions.
