History and monuments

The city of Poreč with its adjacent harbor is located on a low limestone bedrock between the Lima bay and the Mirna river valley. Poreč is the crossroads of the main roads that run along the west coast of Istria.

The local climate is unusually mild. The average temperature is around 25°C in August, 4.5°C in January. There are rich vineyards around the town, the locals are busy growing fruit, fishing and especially tourism.

The resort of Poreč offers a varied palette of cultural and evening life. In terms of history, Poreč is considered one of the most interesting areas of Istria. Due to its location, it originally belonged to a Roman colony (the so-called Polonia Iulia Parentium). In the 6th and 7th centuries during the Byzantine Exarchate, it was an important center for bishops. The most important surviving building is undoubtedly the original Euphrasian complex - today the Euphrasian Basilica. It consists of an atrium with a covered corridor and an octagonal baptismal font chapel. This chapel was later transformed into a bishop's palace, which was used for funeral ceremonies of important church dignitaries. After the decline of Byzantium and the rise of the Frankish Empire, Poreč was declared an independent city commune. It was characterized by a particularly strong representation of the patriarchs of Aquileia, who supported the establishment of the Republic of Venice despite the resistance of the local population. After many battles, the city of Poreč suffered a loss not only in its inhabitants, but also in its historical monuments, which were gradually restored. However, the Republic of Venice could not withstand the constant incursions of the occupiers - the Genoese. After protracted battles, the Habsburgs won, and they also took over Venice. At that time, the city becomes the main center of Istria with the seat of the Istrian National Assembly, in which the Italians gradually take over power. Historically significant is the House of Assembly (Sabornice), which was originally built as a Franciscan monastery and modified to its present form in the 19th century. Croatian and Italian MPs spoke in the chamber, defending their rights amid a tumultuous uproar.

Furthermore, the resort of Istria, including the town of Poreč, underwent another historical upheaval during World War I, when it belonged to the Italians and then to the occupiers from Germany. After the Allied raids against the Germans, Poreč was largely destroyed. Until 1947, Poreč (including Istria) first fell under Yugoslavia and then under present-day Croatia.

A short excursion into the history of this area is important for understanding the origin of the wealth of Istrian culture and its peculiarity as a space in which there was a great mixing of socio-cultural differences and nationalities (especially Slavs, Romanians and Germans on the territory of Croatia). The inhabitants of Istria are considered to be one of the most tolerant inhabitants of Croatia, especially at the level of the Italian minority. The Croatian language and the Italian language are equal in most cities. Here we can find a bilingual translation of some shops, banks, restaurants, etc.

The core of the city of Poreč lies on a narrow peninsula. Famous tourist areas include Blue Lagoon, Brulo, Pical, Spadici and Green Lagoon. For active and passive tourists, there is a rich offer of sports activities at sea and on land, and many sights that are worth visiting.

Interesting are the finds of old excavations in the vicinity of the city, which bring many testimonies of the historical settlement of the city many centuries ago. The already mentioned basilica of St. Euphrasia. This basilica was built on the foundations of the ancient Romans (around the 6th century). It was only declared a UNESCO monument in 1997 and is among the protected world monuments. Other attractions include the historical museum, which offers an extensive collection of time-lapse finds from various historical periods of the city. In Poreč you will find many other remains of Roman architectural monuments, ancient temples, houses and palaces built in the Venetian Gothic style and many other diverse building styles.
