Bay Defora - island Korcula

Defora is an area on the south side of the island of Korcula, where there are many coves and hiking trails. Many words on the island of Korcula has its origins in the Venetian language and the word defora means "from outside " - the party open to the sea on the southeast of the island. Defora has a unique landscape and great opportunities for fishing.

Island of Korcula has an area of 279 km ², 46.8 km long and on average 7.8 km wide. It lies near the dalmatian coast and the Peljesac peninsula can be reached by sailing around 1 km wide strait. On the island is around 16,000 permanently inhabitants and and so is the second most populous island of the Adriatic Sea. The highest peaks of the island are Klupca with 568 m and Korn with 510 m above sea level. The island is easily accessible by ferry from the mainland of Drvenik or of the port Orebic on the peninsula Peljesac.

History and monuments

The town of Korčula is one of the most valuable urban heritage reserves in the Croatian littoral. The old part of Korčula lies on an elevated peninsula connected to the mainland only by a narrow isthmus and is surrounded on all sides by walls from the 14th - 16th centuries, which takes 15 - 20 minutes to get around. The remarkable architecture and floor plan of the old town resembles a herringbone. Strossmazer Square with the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of St. Mark. Near the cathedral is the house where the traveler Marco Polo was probably born.
