Unconventional holiday in Croatia

Island Dugi otok

Croatia, Northern Dalmatia

Dugi otok is the largest island in the Zadar archipelago and has numerous bays, the most famous of which are Sakarun and Telascica. We definitely recommend a visit to Telascica as it has become a strictly protected landscape area - Telascica Nature Park. On the island of Dugi otok there is the olive grove Saljsko polje, which the locals call "olive forest" with olives up to 700 years old. On the island you can get to know the mysterious underwater world in numerous diving sites. In the summer, various fishermen evenings, donkey races, sporting events and races are held on the island, the most famous of which are the "Saljske uzance" in Sali. Regular boat lines to the island sail daily from Zadar.

History and monuments

The settlement of Sali, which is named after the former local salt pans, offers the Marian Church with a beautiful interior including a painting of the Dead Christ. Other points of interest are the patrician houses of the Zadar nobility, such as the Renaissance houses of the Gverinis and Rančićs, the Baroque house of the Petriciolis, etc. In the towns of Božava and Soline, we will also visit the local monuments and at the end we will reach Cape Veli Rat, where there will be a nice swimming opportunity near the lighthouse.
Božava is a quiet resort with wooded surroundings, where history lovers can admire old churches dating back to the 9th century. The parish church was later rebuilt and the cemetery church of St. Nicholas still retains its appearance from the 9th to the 11th century. Some houses hide the remains of former fortifications against pirate raids.
