Unconventional holiday in Croatia

Nin

Croatia, Northern Dalmatia

Nin is a small town located about 15 km northwest of Zadar. The center of the ancient city is an islet, 500 m in diameter, connected to the mainland by two bridges, formed on the sandy slope of the former mouth of the river Miljusic Jaruga into the sea. On the north side is surrounded by a sand pond and a cottage settlement Zdrijac, on the east side there is a salt pans and on the south and west side there is a newer part of the village. Nin extends into several formed zones: the historic island, the weekend village of Zdrijac, the new part of Nin, Bilotinjak and Nin Vodice.
Nin developed on a small sandy pond that is today roughly egg-shaped, about 500 m long and up to 4 m high above the sea. Its convenient location and fertile area around the settlement enabled it to become an urban, cultural and political center in the ancient past.

History and monuments

Nin, with its original name Aenona - a settlement of the well-known Illyrian tribe Liburni - has a long and very rich history. After the arrival of the Romans, the seat was fortified and many public buildings were built. At the beginning of the 7th century Nin succumbed to a massive Avar-Slavic raid. The Croatian tribe then settled here and adapted to the ancient culture. Thanks to this circumstance, the prerequisites for building one of the most important centers of public life for other Croatian immigrants were created here. In the 14th – 18th centuries Nin was part of the Venetian domain, but it was destroyed by the conflicts between the Venetians and the Turks, then rebuilt, but only as a village-like village. Malaria, which was widespread at the time, prevented further development. Despite all the disasters that the city has gone through in history, several architectural gems of former glory have been preserved and are definitely worth a visit. Among them all, the pre-Romanesque Sveti Križ church, probably from the 9th century, occupies the 1st place. A lot of valuables have also been preserved, which are concentrated in various collections. For example, in the temple treasury (riznica), which is also called "Gold and silver of the city of Nin", gems are stored that can make Nin the envy of many collections in European capitals.

Swimming and beach Nin

Nin is located on a very small island, connected to the mainland by two old stone bridges. Sandy beaches, warm crystal clear sea, perfect for long walks along the sea, pine forests along the beaches, as well as fun and sports facilities on the beaches are a guarantee for an unforgettable holiday. The sandy beaches and long sandy shallow coves that surround it are suitable for families with young children.
